A stylized Iris, the Fleur-de-Lys is used both decoratively and symbolically. In French culture,
the fleur-de-lys has symbolized royalty, rebirth and growth. Due to its three petals, the
fleur-de lys signifies perfection, light, and life, and for centuries has been linked with areas formerly
settled by France, such as Louisiana and Quebec.
The Fleur-de-lys is the logo worn by our New Orleans Saints Football Team, but after Hurricane
Katrina, the ubiquitous symbol is appearing nearly everywhere in the
Crescent
City and wherever
displaced
New Orleans residents can be found, as well as becoming a symbol of solidarity with
New Orleans for people residing in the rest of the country and world! Many New Orleanians look
at the symbol as a spirit of hope and as a “memorial” of the storm.
