Dashka Roth –
Having grown up in
Providence,
R.I., Dashka was exposed to art at an early age. She remembers going into
Boston to see the Ballet, and to visit the museums, as well as having access to the Rhode Island School of Design Museum and Trinity Square Theatre in
Providence.
Dashka attended the
University of
R.I. where she majored in Theatre. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from
Boston
University, Dashka began making jewelry, working for Olde Hampshire Silversmiths in
Cambridge,
MA. Later she took private lessons with Anne Garland, also in
Boston. Eventually she returned to school, attending RISD where she majored in Jewelry & Metalsmithing, a division of the Sculpture Department. Subsequently she studied Jewelry repair and Stone-setting and was also certified in Diamond Grading and Colored Stone Identification at the Gemological Institute of America in
Santa Monica,
California.
Dashka moved to
New Orleans in 1978, and opened La Petite Jewellerie on
Toulouse Street in the French Quarter in 1979. Ten years later she opened Dashka Roth Contemporary Art on
Magazine Street, and 1-1/2 years later made a move uptown to a smaller shop on
Magazine St. where she continued as Dashka Roth Contemporary Jewelry. In 1994 she moved to her current location on Chartres Street where, as a survivor of Hurricane Katrina she has renovated the building, and is currently living above the gallery with her husband, in the same space that his grandparents occupied over a half-century ago.
Dashka’s gallery was nominated in 1995 and 1996, and selected in 1997 through 2005 as one of the Top 100 Retailers of American Craft by the Buyers’ Market of American Crafts and Niche Magazine. Two of those years, 1999 and 2001, she was selected as one of the Top Ten Retailers of American Craft. In 2006 the "Top 100 Retailers" designation was discontinued.
